To the editor:
I grew up in Front Royal, and my family and I have known Congressman Robinson for a number of years. Imagine my surprise to learn from Mr. Truman Keesey’s letter to your paper that Congressman Robinson is the vijlaip straight out of “Perils of Pauline.!1 it;s enough to shake the faith of even his most ardent supporters!
Wondering if this “villain" could be the same nice guy who has been representing us so ably for the past eight years, 1 decided to investigate Mr. Keesey's charges and this is what I found out:
1. The National Council of Senior Citizens who gave Mr. Robison only an eight percent voting record was formed by an old AFL-CIO organizer named Nelson Cruikshank, for the purpose of discrediting conservatives who vote against labor. The votes he uses to rate them have almost no bearing at all on the elderly, but do reflect labor. On the other hand, the National Alliance of Senior Citizens (which was organized for and by senior citizens) rates the congressmen on votes of importance to them, and J. Kenneth Robinson got a 97 percent rating. I am sure that the fact he has voted for a more than 50 percent increase in benefits to social security recipients since 1971, and the fact that he cosponsored legislation to remove the penalty from those people who wish to work to supplement their social security, and that periodically he has hired a senior citizen intern to advise him on the problems of the aged and legislation to correct same, and that Congressman Robinson has waged a steady battle against government spending and inflation—the twin scourges of those on fixed income—all must mean more to the elderly than anything that would be of interest to labor.
