Those questioned by Gallup responded two-to-one that children should be promoted from grade to grade only if they can pass examinations, with 37 per cent indicating the tests should be prepared at the local level.
Most respondents believe students who fail tests should get special remedial help, and about half said students who fail tests and do poorly in remedial classes should repeat the grade. The rest recommended further help or placement in a special program.
Asked how much confidence citizens have in their local school boards. 18 per cent said a great deal; 43 per cent, a fair amount; 16 per cent, very little; and six per cent, none. Boards got their highest vote of confidence in the Midwest and South and in smaller communities and had least support in cities with one million population or more.
