Apple Hill Farm
Compared to Caledonia Farm and The Conyers House, Sperryville’s Apple Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast is a relative newcomer. It was opened by owners Wade and Dorothy Waller in 1992.
Like her more established counterparts, Waller relies on repeat visitors and referrals more than advertising expenditures.
Early ads in the Washington Post were scaled back after Apple Hill was listed in several bed and breakfast publications including “America’s Wonderful Little Inns and B&Bs,” she said. “All things considered we don’t spend much on advertising, certainly not as much as we used to. And the Internet has helped a lot.” she added.
“Some people basically stay on the balconies all weekend. Others like to go horseback riding, canoeing on the Shenandoah, biking and antiquing. We try to keep up with what’s going on.”
Waller agrees that bed and breakfasts have become a tourist draw in and of themselves, not just a place to stay while visiting the surrounding area.
“People have said to us that it is a neat way to travel because bed and breakfasts cater to you specifically, rather than just ‘the people in room 403’,” she said.
