On June 14, 1995, the Washington Town Council appointed the Future’s Committee to start planning. Our thanks go to the original members of this committee (Ray Gooch, chairman, Peter Skowronski, Charlie Tompkins, Louise vanDort, and the Mayor, Stew Willis) for their long and arduous work, meeting with citizens of the town and nearby county, the Rappahannock National Bank, Trinity and the other churches, to get a sense of peoples’ wishes.
Finally, the local citizenry of the town and county, has become concerned, involved, and vocal, and, with the appointment of a consultant, we are moving into the next phase of gathering data and ideas for comprehensive planning for the long pull.
We all plan in our personal lives if we are going to pass a legacy on to other; similarly, Mr. Gooch sought to alert the citizens of Washington to plan our legacy to the town, county and state. Mr. Gooch deserves our enduring gratitude. He will continue to play a central role as a newly designated steering committee, under his chairmanship, replaces the Future’s Committee to provide oversite as we go forward. Thank you, Mr. Gooch, for your foresight, leadership, tenacity, patience and endurance.
