The Fauquier Campus Project plan began in 1988 when Bob Sowder, a realtor/developer, donated a renovated barn and three acres to be a “satellite” community college campus. It is located on U.S. 29 south of Warren ton and expanded to 50 acres when Sowder sold the college adjoining land.
When asked if he had plans to develop in the area, Hazel said he didn’t because there are too many unresolved local issues. Eventually it will happen, though, he said, and the Fauquier Campus of Lord Fairfax College is an indicator of that beginning. He contributed to the initial fundraising efforts of the Fauquier Campus in 1988.
Plans call for a 62,000square-foot building with a fully-staffed library, communications network and a continuing education department that develops specific training programs for local businesses. President Beck said construction on the new facility should begin in November and open for classes in September 1998. The campus will be able to accomodate 1,250 students at the cost of $46.65 per credit hour.
Hazel said community colleges will be the bedrock of job training in the future. Virginia has 18,000 to 20,000 jobs available in the technology field and the training needs to be available so the businesses do not leave, he said.
