with the vise of toe grabs or rims was determined by comparing the shoes of injured horses to those of the control horses. The effects of age and gender were also considered in the data analysis.

Results

With low toe grabs, the odds of a fatal musculo-skeletal injury were approximately two times greater than those of horses shod without toe grabs, and seven times greater for suspensory apparatus failure. With regular toe grabs, the odds of a fatal musculoskeletal injury were 3.5 times greater than those of horses shod without toe grabs, and 16 times greater for suspensory apparatus failure.

With rims, an alternative to toe grabs which offer increased traction, the odds of a fatal musculo-skeletal injury or suspensory apparatus failure were actually two-thirds lower than those of horses shod without rim shoes. Because very few horses were shod with high toe grabs, estimates could not be made for their proportionate increase in odds of injury; however, it is likely that they would be even greater.
