Some injuries appear to be the product of long-term insidious skeletal and soft tissue damage resulting from repeated loads during high-speed exercise. Though living tissues can repair damage, the rate of repair is somewhat limited and injuries occur when exercise-related damage accumulates at a rate exceeding that of damage repair.
High-speed exercise is, undoubtedly, important in the preparation for a successful racing career; however, very intensive racing and race training schedules may cause a high rate of exercise related damage to the musculoskeletal system which could, ultimately, result in catastrophic injury.
The challenge for equine researchers is to define the processes involved with adapting to the demands of horse racing so that appropriate conditioning guidelines can be developed. Researchers must also identify the various risk factors that predispose racehorses to injury.
