A gala event attended by 450 guests was hosted at Huntley Hall by Jane and John Tilghman “Til” Hazel Jr. on Saturday. The evening celebrated the end of the design time and the beginning of the construction for the Fauquier Campus of the Lord Fairfax Community College, according to President Marilyn Beck.
“The evening brought together an interesting collection of people in the area,” said Hazel.
The event also raised nearly $350,000 to endow a scholarship program to be used by residents of Rappahannock County, Fauquier County and the Town of Warrenton. The original goal of $100,000 was far exceeded in this initial fundraising event for the campus.
The black-tie evening consisted of a cocktails, a seated dinner under a large tent and a live auction after dinner was followed with dancing to music provided by “Swing Shift.” The Hazels’ home is located on 4,000 acres in Broad Run several miles from The Plains.
Alfred and Clara Kummli, Rappahannock County residents, were patrons with a contribution of at least $5,000. The largest donation for the evening, $55,000, was given by Paul and Sheila Wolk of Hume. They are the college’s largest contributors, with over $1,000,000 in donations.
