A series of external and internal signals have been telling hummingbirds to head for the tropics for years beyond counting. And what a trip they make! It is known that the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, our eastern species, takes off from the coast of Louisiana for a 500 mile, non-stop, overwater flight to the Yucatan Peninsula.
In the October issue of Birder’s World, ornithologist Carroll L. Henderson had this to say on the subject: “.their (hummingbird’s) migration is controlled by photoperiod, not by presence or absence of nectar feeders. Enjoy the hummingbirds at your feeders throughout fall migration. Leave at least one feeder up for an extra month after the hummers are gone. This is for rare wandering hummingbirds that may show up at nectar feeders hundreds of miles from their normal ranges. If you take your feeder down too early, you will never know these rare visitors are in the area.”
