but does so in a different way. Instead of providing traction only at the toe of the shoe, the rim shoe’s extended portion goes all the way around the bottom surface.

The rim shoe does not change the geometry of the hoof and instead, it allows either the outer or inner edge all around the shoe to dig into the track surface while the hoof remains flat and the force remains constant around the entire circumference of the hoof.

Dr. Kane emphasized that these are only theories about how toe grabs and rims may work and that the study he conducted was only designed to identify a possible link between toe grabs and the risk of injury. Determining how toe grabs increase the risk of injury will be the focus of future research. Some of the more common injuries, such as bucked shins and strained suspensories, may also be affected by the use of toe grabs and rim shoes and warrant investigation.

The second half of the project, a study of hoof shape and balance as possible risk factors for catastrophic injury, is nearing completion. The second study could lead to hoof trimming recommendations that reduce the risk of fatal injury.
