Though the famed Glouscestershire course is widely regarded as the world’s championship hurdle venue, the Liverpool establishment also offers an attractive hurdle course for novice runners. It is mostly flat, with a wide and long run-in from the last. The race distance at Aintree is two and a sixth miles; Cheltenham’s is two and a half miles. The American races are two and a quarter milps at Morven Park, two and a half miles at Far Hills and two and a three-eighth miles at Columbus.
Many have tried but only one American runner has been able, to win a Sport of Kings event in England. Kay Jeffords’ Lonesome Glory trounced the field there in 1992, annexing in the process a $50,000 bonus prize as the winner of one American series race (at Far. Hills) and one English race (the first of two series events at Cheltenham.) As the Bruce Miller-trainee was ineligible for the $1 million bonus, he did not race in the second Cheltenham ‘chase.
