careful daily record of birds at the feeder and in the yard. Her records show that we have seen hummingbirds as late as early October.
That should clear up the matter. Just remember, birds are great opportunists and “free loaders.” If they can get food without foraging for it they will do so and return to working for a meal with no problems at all.
Not only has this been a good year for hummingbirds, the pokeberry crop is excellent. Now is the time to collect the hanging clusters of purple berries and put them in the freezer for a winter feast for bluebirds, jays, woodpeckers, Hermit Thrushes and, just maybe, an overwintering robin.
Lee Trott and I place each cluster of ripe berries in a separate plastic bag in the freezer. When snow and ice cover the ground, put the berries on the feeder (or on the ground if you wish). They get squishy as they thaw so be careful not to stain your clothes.
September 22 is the first day of autumn. It’s time to look forward to the first Whitethroated Sparrow and Junco to appear in the yard.
