Sixty-four horses which sustained a catastrophic fracture while racing in 1991 were each matched to a control horse of the same age and gender randomly selected from the race in which the injury occurred. The combined schedule of races and timed workouts for each of the injured horses were evaluated and compared to those of the matched control horses.

The frequency and cumulative distance of consecutive races and timed workout sessions provide some indication of the past exercise intensity at or near racing speeds. The racing speed distances were estimated for the two-month time period prior to the date of injury for each horse in every case-control pair.

The relationship between total number of furlongs (eight furlongs equals one mile) accumulated in a two month time period and risk of catastrophic racing fracture was estimated.
