are designated by the Sport of Kings also. The series was designed to attract well-bred talented young horses to the steeplechasing game, using the enticement of high purses. It has succeeded in bringing new faces into steeplechasing, and annually, horses who win the SoK maiden races regularly go on to prove competitive in the open division. Maiden races are slated at St. James, Sept. 13 in Chicago, at Far Hills Oct. 25 and at Columbus Nov. 6.
The VSA will again offer its innovative Claiming Series, with races at Fairfax Sept. 20, Foxfield Sept. 28, Virginia Fall Oct. 4 and the International Gold Cup Oct. 18. The open claimers over hurdles range in claiming price (the amount of money each horse within the race can be “claimed” for) from $7,500 to $12,500.
The three horses which accumulate the most points in the series will share a $5,000 bonus, with $2,500 to the winner, $1,500 to second and $1,000 to third. Tb be eligible for the bonus, the original owner of the horse must be a VSA member by Sept. 1. If a horse within the series happens to be claimed, the points follow him.
