Timed workouts were defined as exercise sessions in which a horse is clocked running near racing speed and, similar Lo races, represent periods of time when maximum demands are placed on the musculoskeletal system of racehorses.

While it is apparent that musculoskeletal supporting structures possess the ability to adapt to the strain and stress of intensive exercise, it is also evident that if the physical demands placed on these structures exceed their adaptive capacity, the results can be detrimental and end in catastrophic breakdowns.
