“It was confidence and determination,” Colgan said. “I looked up to him and I learned an awful lot from him. He was one of those people that you run into from time to time who just don’t take no for an answer and don’t say, ‘No, you can’t do that.’ He hated the words ‘don’t’ and ‘can’t.’ He felt if there was a way to get something done, he’d find it, especially with horses. He had that sixth sense about horses that all the good ones do.”
Racing Hall of Fame trainer James E. “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons sold Walsh Independence, who became one of Walsh’s great horses, winning several stakes. Independence was a full brother to Bold Ruler.
