Catastrophic injuries to racehorses sometimes occur during races or training. These unforeseen injuries may lead to ipjury of riders and other horses, and often end in the humane euthanasia of irreparably injured horses.
The California Horse Racing Board’s postmortem program offers researchers at the University of California, Davis school of veterinary medicine a unique opportunity to study horses that are fatally injured during racing or race training. The postmortem program revealed that nearly two fatal injuries occurred for every 1,000 thoroughbred race starts in California in 1991, an average of one fatal racing injury per week.
