In the 1940s, Walsh and his wife, Kitty, purchased Stoneybrook Farm near Southern Pines, N.C. The steeplechase meet they started there ran from 1948 to 1996, and during that time it attracted crowds as large as 20,000.
“He introduced so many people to steeplechasing,” Colgan said.
Walsh won steeplechasing’s highest honor, the F. Ambrose Clark Award, in 1975, and is in the North Carolina Sports and Horse Show Jumping Hall of Fames. Now he is in the Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga. , Walsh once said, “The most basic thing about training is letting the horse train himself."
Having Walsh was never a bad substitute.
