accident Tuesday afternoon involving a county school bus loaded with elementary school children ltft everyone involved shaken but unhurt.
“We were lucky,” Superintendent Robert Estabrook said.
According to Trooper R. A. Baines, a 1982 Toyota opei„ied by Robert Edward Emerson, of Columbia, Md., was eastbound on Rt. 211 when he failed to see Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department Deputy Captain Ed Streapy, who was standing in the eastbound lane directing traffic while school buses loaded with students headed home pulled from Rt. 636 onto Rt. 211.
Emerson’s car struck the front bumper of a 1984 school bus operated by Christine Timbers, of Sperry ville, which was making a right turn onto Rt. 211 on its way to Flint Hill.
Emerson was charged with reckless driving as a result of the accident.
Captain Streapy said that “I was standing in the middle of the road directing traffic. He was coming -- he never slowed down. I had to jump out of the way or he would have hit* me. He never applied his brakes until he was almost on the bus.” The deputy, a six-year veteran of the county force, added that two sheriffs department cruisers were parked on the side of the road with their blue lights flashing.
“I’m just glad none of the kids got hurt,” he concluded.
