Paul Nichols and Nancy Reeve echoed Mrs. Massie’s compliments on the condition of the school buildings. “It’s the result of a lot of hard work,” Mrs. Reeve said. “I heard more good comments from the students about the new lockers,” added Mr. Nichols.
In a brief transportation report, Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell noted that all students will be given assigned bus seats this year in an effort to improve bus safety. The new requirement will give bus drivers better control and enable them to tell quickly if a student is missing, Mr. Campbell noted.
Also on the subject of bus safety, the board agreed to write the county’s representatives on the State Highway Commission and in the General Assembly, stressing their objections to the increased truck traffic through Rappahannock County brought by the closing of Route 17 in Fauquier to trucks. The board also decided to pursue the possibility of (1) posting notices at nearby truck stops of the times when school buses are on the roads, (2) erecting signs on Chester Gap mountain warning of school bus traffic and (3) erecting signs marking school bus stops on Route 211 and Route 522. At Mr. Oliver’s request, the board will also seek to have the speed limit reduced on Chester Gap mountain during the hours that school buses are on the road.
