But Wayne loved Jeanie Wood, at least that’s what he cut into his desk top. She was beautiful with her waist-length blonde hair, blue eyes and soft voice. Jeanie always bought lunch and took such tiny bites that she never finished. She wore ruffled socks and her legs were never scratched up or bruised. All the boys liked her, she ignored them.
I liked Wayne a lot. So during one May Day program I pulled my white crepe-paper skirt up making it shorter than Jeanie’s, and Wayne still chased after her.
Before the year was out I liked Willard Bright. He had picked my pencil off the floor several times and liked hitting me with wet paper balls. Once he loaned me his blue handkerchief for my nosebleed.
Funny, I can’t remember what we studied that year. I did pass to the 5th grade. And I do wonder whatever happened to Wayne and Willard, Jeanie and Kay.
