Besides the richest purse in the sport’s history, the Breeders’ Cup will also have several other important effects on steeplechasing.
“It will be a very attractive television feature,” commented Mr. Colgan. “Most of the huge TV audience who watch the Breeders’ Cup don’t distinguish the difference between types of flat races. They can’t miss with the steeplechase horses as they will definitely be noticed.”
In addition to the eight and onehalf minute segment in the fourhour Breeders’ Cup telecast, Fair Hill will be on for an hour and a half on the USA Cable Network and a half hour on a Baltimore television station.
Sam Slater, whose Hunt Cup productions have been the video patrol judge cameras at 90 percent of the hunt meets for the past half dozen years, is television coordinator. Richard Pitman, correspondent for the BBC and The Sporting Life will provide color commentary. The race will be called by Tony Bentley, prominent race track announcer.
