Under the revised ordinance soon to be enacted, the quarry will be designated agricultural, and in an agricultural zone, landfills will be allowed by special exception permit following public hearings by the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors, he said, pointing out the local zoning hurdles which would have to be cleared.
No matter what the decision on the landfill permit, “we owe it to ourselves and our people to determine if this site still has dynamite,” said Chairman Hubert Gilkey. “My recommendation is that we tell the state we don’t want this site approved as a landfill ... I don’t see how we can afford to take the chance.”
And it wasn’t just the dynamite that worried the supervisors.
