The American Red Cross Blood Services, Washington Region, announced an urgent appeal for blood donors. As a result of a serious shortfall in blood supplies some elective surgery is being postponed or cancelled by a number of area hospitals.
According to Fred W. Darr, M.D., Medical Director for Blood Services; “The continuous decline in community blood supplies in recent weeks has precipitated this situation.” All blood types are needed, especially types B and 0. Less than a one day inventory is available on Red Cross shelves for those types. Ideally, a five day supply is desired in all blood types.
“We need immediate and sustained support of the public over the next several weeks to prevent the kinds of crisis that could impair the treatment of emergency cases,” noted Dr. Darr.
