Great Meadow Races
Preparing to begin only its third year on the local fall race circuit. Great Meadow is already a well established part of the Virginia steeplechase scene.
With this year’s meet on Saturday, Oct. 18, falling two weeks before the $250,000 Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase Race at Fair Hill, Md., the race course near The Plains may see some top quality horses in its races.
Great Meadow’s program will begin at about noon with a duo of pony races. The first of six sanctioned races, a $5,000 two-mile maiden, goes off at 1:30 p.m. Second race on the card is a $5,000 maiden timber race going 3'A miles. An open hurdle race carrying a purse of $8,000 will be third on the Great Meadow program.
Feature race at the state’s newest course is the $12,500 International Gold Cup, an open timber race going 3l/z miles. In the past this race has attracted some of the top timber horses from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania and Great Meadow officials are confident that this year’s race will be an exciting renewal.
