Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell said that he realized something was happening when he heard Deputy Streapy yelling for the car to stop. “These little reminders scare you to death,” Mr. Campbell said. “How could you have any more help than we have?”
“It makes you wonder what you have to do to protect the kids,” Mr. Estabrook added.
Mr. Campbell said that School Board members and administrators had expressed concern at the board’s last meeting about the possibility of just such an accident involving speeding vehicles on Rt. 211. “I told them ‘You want to get concerned, come out to the elementary school some day at 3:10 — look at the way people drive on that road (Rt. 211).’ ”
Asked about the possibility of marking the intersection with flashing school zone signs, Mr. Campbell replied that state law requires that such zones be within a certain distance of the school building, and the Rt. 636 intersection does not meet the requirement. He stressed, however, the cooperation given by the Sheriffs Department in providing deputies to direct traffic every afternoon while the buses are leaving the school.
Trooper Baines estimated damage to the bus at “a couple of hundred dollars,” and about $900 to Emerson’s car.
