If an escape route is provided, such as an open silo door, the gas will flow down the silo chute to the base of the silo. If unobstructed, it often will settle in silo feed rooms and/or invade bam areas.
To reduce the hazards associated with silo gas, Hetzel recommends the following precautions:
• Do not enter a silo during the first three or four days after filling unless the silo has been well-ventilated first. Run a blower at least 20 minutes before entering a silo. This precaution should be used regardless of the length of time the silage has been stored.
• The silo chute door closest to the level of the silage should be open. This allows the nitrogen dioxide to escape when the blower is turned on. Silo feed rooms should be ventilated by the use of open windows and fans for a period of three weeks after filling the silo.
• Keep doors between the silo or feed room tightly sealed to avoid contamination of bam areas.
• Do not enter a silo without someone available on the outside to assist you.
• Be on the alert for bleach-like odors and/or yellowish-brown fumes. Dead birds and dead flies at the base of the silo and under enclosed chutes often indicate the presence of silo gas.
• If it’s compulsory to enter a silo during the three-week danger period, wear an approved self-contained breathing apparatus and attach a life-line to soifteone outside the silo.
