Morven Park Races
An extra race has been added to the Morven Park schedule for 1986, nudging the total up to a healthy seven race card for the Saturday, Oct. 11 meet.
Along with the larger program, purses at this year’s Morven race will also be larger, by $9,000, with a total of $37,000 being offered thanks to new sponsorships from the U.S. Trust Company, Ryder Trucks and West Park Hotels. The meet near Leesburg should be very attractive to local horsemen, not only for its variety and lucrative offerings, hut also because the course should he in excellent condition too.
Last year Morven Park purchased a special irrigation machine and officials say they are all tooled up to irrigate the course this year starting three weeks before the meet. For the first time Morven is also going to start using artificial brush jumps instead of stuffing cedar fences for its brush races.
Racing starts at Morven at 2 p.m. with a duo of maiden brush races. The third race is for non-winners of two and the fourth is an open claimer. The new race on the card will be the feature brush race, a $10,000 handicap going 2V-> miles. This will be followed by the Samuel H. Rogers Memorial timber race, the last of the Loudoun County Timber Triple Crown series. The threemile timber contest carries a $7,000 purse and may see some strong entries prepping for Great Meadow's big timber race the following week. _
The final race of the day at Morven Park is a two-mile turf race. With a 162-pound weight limit, high by flat race standards, this race is designed for amateur riders and is part of the fall highweight flat series.
