lo the editor:

While on a recent visit to Rappahannock County, my childhood home, I stopped by the Sperryville Emporium to look around at the place that was my 4th grade school.

To the top of the steps, the last room on the right, 1959 seemed a long time passed, until I stepped mto that 4th grade room. I was nine years old. And with the same hardwood floor, green chipped walls and remnants of the blackboard, remembering was easy.

Mrs. Turner was standing beside her desk. She had a wide smile with perfect teeth. Her hair was pulled off her face and into two braids on top. Her cheeks were red circles of rouge. Mrs. Turner smiled a lot. She was reminding us to please hang our wraps in the cloak closet, (terms I had forgotten until then).

Wayne Dodson was my boyfriend. He was tall for his age and had thick, dark hair longer than the other boys. His shirt was always hanging out, and sometimes he would get into fights. He was brave too. He could swing until he had wrapped the swing twice over the pole.
