As cnsp autumn weatner comes to Loudoun County, so do thoughts of the fall steeplechase season in the heart of Virginia’s hunt country. On September 20, the fall steeplechase circuit begins.
New this year is„a three-part Loudoun County Timber Triple Crown with each leg being held at the county’s three main events.
Leading off the pack, the Fairfax Hunt Steeplechase will be held September 20 at historic Belmont Plantation, located on Route 7 east of Leesburg. Gates open at noon, and the first race begins at 1 p.m. General admission is $5, with children under 12 free.
There are six races, including the $6,000 Bowman Bowl, the featured three-mile timber race making up the first leg of the county’s Triple Crown. Other races include the $5,000 Guest Cup, a 2.5 mile brush jump race, and a one-mile turf, 1.5 mile turf, and 2.5 mile brush races.

Two weeks later, on October 4-5, action moves to Glenwood Park off Route 50 in Middleburg, for the Virginia Fall Race. On Saturday, the second leg of the Triple Crown will be held over a three mile timber race.
General admission is $5 per person. Gates open both days at 11 a.m. with post time set for 1 p.m.
On Saturday, there are six races, including two mile maiden hurdles, a two mile open turf, and a 1.5 mile maiden turf. On Sunday, five races are slated, including a 2.5 mile maiden hurdle and two one mile flat races, and the featured Daniel Sands Cup, a $7,500 purse 2.5 mile hurdle. Also on Sunday, at 4:30 p.m., is the American Hunter Championships with fox hunters attending from across the nation.

Closing up the county’s triumverate of races, on October 11, Morven Park, off Route 15 north of Leesburg, hosts its Fall Race. Gates open at noon, with the first post time set for 1:30 p.m. General admission is $4 per person.
Maryland National Bank sponsors the featured $10,000 purse 2 mile brush race. Other races include a 2 mile flat race and four 2 and 2 1/4 mile brush races.
The final leg of the new Loudoun County Timber Triple Crown is sponsored by U.S. Trust with a purse of $5,000.

Also attracting numerous racing fans is the Virginia Gold Cup Association’s race on October 18 at Gre&t Meadow, The Plains, off Route 66 West. Gates open at 10 a.m., with the first race set for 1:30 p.m. General admission is $10 for a carload of six people.
The featured race is the International Gold Cup, a 3.5 mile timber race offering a $12,500 purse. Others include a pony race, three brush races and a pair of two mile flat races.
