Choate’s Turtlehead, a stakes winner in 1984, is back in training and expected to start at the Monmouth meeting. Flatterer is the horse to beat, and trainer and partowner Jonathan Sheppard also has Eremite and Polar Parallel for consideration. Census, a winner at Saratoga this season, is expected to be in the stakes lineup as is Dogwood Farm’s newly imported Kesslin. Trainer Ronnie Houghton has Le Sauteur and In Ferm ready and Charlie Fenwick has two possibiles in Jibaku and Pont du Loup.
At Camden, S.C., preparations continue on new grandstands and infield sanitary facilities for the $60,000 Colonial Cup, a race that has always brought out the best America could offer to face European horses. At the NSHA offices both Mr. Gallo and Mr. Colgan feel the season finale has lost none of its prestige despite the enormous purse for jumpers being offered in the Breeders’ Cup.
