The Red Cross has announced an emergency appeal for blood
donors due to a serious and continuing shortfall in supplies of all blood types. In some cases the situation is so critical that elective surgery in area hospitals is being postponed.
Much of the problem can apparently be related to the public’s fear of the possibility of contracting AIDS by exposure to contaminated blood or equipment. The Red Cross stresses that it is impossible to contract the AIDS virus through blood donation. All of the equipment used in the donation program is sterilized, and much is used once and thrown away so there is no possibility of contamination.
The Red Cross has also published a piece entitled “What Good is a Blood Donor?” Given the current critical situation, it is worth thinking about.

For kids who fall out of trees or anywhere else ... For anybody any age with bleeding ulcers ... For people in the wrong place at the wrong time . . . For the very tired with severe anemia . . . The Aileen plant in Flint Hill is sponsoring a special Bloodmobile visit on Tuesday, September 23, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Flint Hill fire hall. We urge anyone who is able to donate blood (and that includes almost all adults, regardless of age of physical condition) to assist the Red Cross in this emergency situation.
