The Monmouth County Hunt meet at Red Bank has added a hefty $40,000 more to its purse structure than last year, and is offering the first of three $50,000 stakes for the season.
Falling just two weeks before the Breeders’ Cup, the featured two-mile Metcalf Memorial Cup may well be the final prep for the big race, and several foreign entries are expected to ship over and race this weekend.
Both Monmouth and Far Hills, N.J. are located but an hour’s drive or so from metropolitan New York and have for over half a century drawn huge crowds to their gates.
The circuit stays in New Jersey for the Far Hills race meet the following weekend. Formerly known as the Essex Fox Hounds race meet when it benefited that well known hunt, an extra $25,000 in purse money has been added to this year’s Far Hills meet. A total of $100,000 will be distributed in a mixed card that includes a 2 5/16-mile steeplechase stake worth $50,000.
