pion is the pre-race favorite to win the $250,000 Breeders’ Cup race in November as well as several other stakes this fall which will soon put him back in the number one slot. Flatterer’s two victories to date -havebeen- the Atlanta Cup and. the— National Hunt Cup at Radnor.
“Horses that have not campaigned much during the spring and summer, like Flatterer, Census and Le Sauteur (currently in sixth place) have got a good chance of moving up in the standings this fall,” says Mr. Gallo. “This triumvirate should make for some exciting racing this fall.”
Tennessean Frank Raquet currently leads the trainer standings but with Reagan, his main moneyearner, out for the season his hold on the title is tenuous. The former show horse trainer does not usually campaign horses during in the fall, but plans to change his schedule this year.
“We’ve been in a slow building pattern the last few years, shaping a lot of South American horses and we’re just at the stage now that the horses can start running this fall,” explains Mr. Raquet. “Running in the fall is often more of a geographical problem for us because we’re so far away from any of the meets and I prefer not to travel with younger horses.”
Cambiar, winner of a claiming race at Saratoga, is Mr. Raquet’s current star. The Tennessee trainer says he also plans to campaign 16 maidens this fall.
For the last 13 years American steeplechasing has been dominated by Englishman Jonathan Sheppard.
