Supervisor J. R. Latham pointed to the safety hazard posed by increased truck traffic on Route 647, a winding road with limited sight distance.
Water in contact with brush and stumps buried in a debris landfill could generate tannic acid and contaminate ground water supplies, noted Supervisor Charles Estes. “With all the blasting at the quarry, there are bound to be fractures in that rock.”
Voting unanimously to request that the state deny Mr. List’s application, the supervisors agreed to forward their reasons with the recommendation.
A score or so Flint Hill residents turned out for Monday’s special board session. At the start, Chairman Gilkey noted that it was not a continuation of a public hearing but “a meeting for us to make our decision.” His announcement prompted a few muttering8 from the crowd. But 15 minutes later, when the vote was taken, the watchers were all smiles. “Your representative government at work!” one visibly pleased Flint Hill man declared in a benediction on the board’s action.
