she has made or collected lor ritual dances. Even the most bizarre of them is not forbidding. Ms. Kerr says that the notion of an evil symbol is quite foreign to eastern cultures.
“Most ancient religions believe that people have both good and evil within them,” she explained. “So a traditional dance character may be evil in one respect, good in another, like fire, or water, or the polar bear, or whatever.”
A regional dance form that interests Ms. Kerr is the square dance. “It has many of the elements of a community dance. Some of the steps may also originally have had symbolic meanings in their Celtic beginning.
Ms. Kerr plans to have some of the children she teaches at the Child Care and Learning Center design and make their own masks to wear in a dance. “It’s a good balance for them to do both this close detailed work, and this bolder more expansive work." she said.
Her belief in the value of free and vigorous expression does not exclude an appreciation of classical discipline and a need for structure in teaching. “In my classes I try to provide a structure corresponding to the age of the child. With young children, a lot of structure is needed. But that doesn’t prevent them from having fun. And I have fun too. I love working with kids."
