For the first time in several years, there’s a real race on for all the year-end steeplechase titles on the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association circuit as the 1986 fall season gets under way.
In previous years, after a successful spring and a profitable summer at Saratoga, Jonathan Sheppard has often had the training title wrapped up by now and George Strawbridge Jr. has had a pretty solid grip on the leading owners title.
But, this year the picture is different. Mr. Sheppard leads the trainers’ standings in money won, but not in races won (where he is in second place), and Mr. Strawbridge’s Augustin Stables in Unionville. Pa. are third on the owners’ list, a long way behind the leader.
In the horse standings, the gap between the top three is very slim, with the fourth, (id h and sixthplaced animals brea .ning dowTn the leaders’ necks also. Only three points separate the top three jockeys going into the fall season, and two points further back another three riders are tied for fourth, leaving this division wide open.
John Griggs’ impressive Steve ^Canyon currently leads the horse standings with three wins, a second and a third from six starts for earnings of $69,140. The Hell Gate Canyon gelding finished second to Flatterer in his first start, the Atlanta Cup, in April and then two weeks later won the $25,000 Pillar Stakes in Lexington, Ky. Also in the spring he won races at Fair Hill and Monmouth Park to move into first place for the season. Steve
