Mr. Sheppard is lurking just a short way behind Mr. Raquet in the trainers’ standings going into the fall, but with Flatterer, ’Twas Ever Thus and Eremite in his tutelage, he has a very good chance of reaching the top again by year’s end.
Currently in third place is Janet Elliot of Unionville, Pa. A fellow countrymanlperson?) of Mr. Sheppard’s, Ms. Elliot was also an apprentice to the perennial champion. The leading lady trainer is only one point behind Mr. Sheppard in the standings.
As the stable rider for Mr. Raquet, leading jockey George Sloan is in a similarly precarious position on the top of the standings. From 34 rides this year, the Tennessee jockey has scored 10 jump and one flat race victories and has earned $107,090. Only one point behind Mr. Sloan is Ricky Hendriks of Unionville who last year finished in second place in the standings and was third in 1984. Mr. Hendriks, who rides for Hall of Fame trainer Burly Cocks, will probably be out for blood this fall.
