The final two races at Great Meadow are on the turf, both at two miles. The first is another of the fall highweight flat series races for amateur riders, the second is for maidens.
As an added incentive for good competition this year, the leading rider and trainer at Great Meadow’s races will receive an award from the race committee. Awards for the groom of the best turned out horse will be given before each race.
Great Meadow officials announced they would permit schooling on the course at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Oct. 15. There will be no temporary overnight stabling at the course this year. Instead, overnight shippers will be boarded in permanent stalls on the farm at the back of the course. Fifty one permanent stalls are expected to be built on the course by next year’s Virginia Gold Cup meet in May.

Montpelier Hunt Races
The local fall season ends on Sunday, Nov. 2, with the Montpelier Hunt Races at the former home of President James Madison.
Formerly owned by* Marion duPont Scott, the historic race course overlooked by the beautiful mansion is now the property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
