After an extremely demanding scrimmage Monday against Culpeper, the Rappahannock High School cross country team found itself burdened with tired, heavy legs in its first regular-season meet against Luray and Page High Schools at Luray.
Luray’s harriers were in command during the first mile of the 2.7 mile race, but then the Rappahannock runners began to pick up the pace - and pick off the opposition. Coming off the most difficult hill on the course Marley Hay had gained the lead. Panther teammates Neil Burke, Jonathan Watson, John Dodson and Dan Herman were also making their moves.
Hay maintained his lead for the rest of the run. His winning time (16:25) was, however, almost two minutes off the course record of 14:31. He was followed in third place by Burke (17:26), Watson (17.38) in fifth, Dodson (18:07) in seventh place and Herman (18:16) right behind him in eight. Rodney Grimsley (19:22)
