they developed a system for governing our country, and they had no small perspective for their vision of the future, inscribed on the Seal as “Nomis Ordo Seclorum“A New Cycle of Centuries.”
The momentous achievement of the U.S. Constitution has been placed aptly in its historical context by the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, who wrote: “I know of only three times in the Western World when statesmen consciously took control of historic destinies: Periclean Athens, Rome under Augustus, and the founding of (the) American Republic.”
The noble vision of the Founding Fathers has been tested in the two centuries that have followed. Most of the great historical forces and factors that have molded the modem world have been played out within the framework of American Constitutional history: imperialism, nationalism, immigration, industrialism, science, religion, democracy and liberty. With these forces have emerged social, political and economic institutions which have had frequent reference to the Constitution as disputes or legislative issues have occurred.
In the months ahead, the Commission will organize lecture discussion programs, essay contests, articles for publication in this newspaper, and other events which will increase public appreciation of the Constitution in history, and in our daily lives. We invite you to join us.
