could have a couple of live timber races too. With Montpelier and Calloway Gardens, Georgia running that weekend and neither meet having a timber race, it wouldn’t interfere with their programs.
“I was about to hang up the phone when I said to George, almost as an afterthought, ‘Why not a Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase?’ ” Mr. Groat recalled. “ ‘That’s a super idea,’ George replied. ‘I’ll call Will Farish tomorrow. ’ ”
A member of the Jockey Club, the Breeders’ Cup Board and NSHA Board of Stewards, Mr. Farish was also a successful owner of steeplechase horses, having raced the fine ’chaser Thrice Worthy among others.
“Well, George hadn’t talked to Farish by Monday, so I called him,” Mr. Groat continued. “I told him what we wanted to do here at Fair Hill and he thought it was a great idea. He had had some positive comments after the Colonial Cup from several of his friends on the same subject, especially after the fine race Salute, the French horse who finished second to Flatterer, had put in.”
