die because of the drought conditions,” Mr. Baker reports of his in^ spection tour. “But now it’s all recovered. It’s in pretty good shape now and will be in very, very good shape if it stays moist.”
Some plans for the Glenwood course had to be changed because of the drought. It was originally scheduled to be seeded over the summer, but drought conditions prevented that. Instead the course was hydroseeded last week.
Local race committees aren’t the only ones concerned with the condition of steeplechase race courses. The fall races sanctioning body, the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, has a course committee that is responsible for seeing that the courses are safe for racing. The committee chairman is Virginia Rodion Cantacuzene who lives near Middleburg.
“The NSHA course committee has already inspected our course and given its stamp of approval,” says Gary Baker. “I think we w'ere the first ones they did this fall.”
Not far from Middleburg, at Morven Park near Leesburg, is another race course that will be in action this fall. Last year the Morven Park committee purchased a very
