The final race of the Virginia fall circuit will take place on Sunday, Nov. 2 at Montpelier, the home of President James Madison that is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. At this most southern of the local courses the problem was not the summer’s drought so much as the damage to the footing caused by heavy rains during last year’s meet.
“We’ve been lucky the course has come back as well as it has,” says Dory Twitched, assistant director of the historic National Trust Property. “We had to entirely reseed after last year’s damage. The entire course was dragged last spring, and we’ve been putting lime on it from time to time. We expect it to be in very good shape by race day. We may be the only ones who don’t want to see a lot of rain, but we can’t forget what all that rain did last year!”
