year she taught, who later returned to become Mrs. Quaintance’s secretary, reported that the scholarship fund established in her honor is “doing real well. It’s an open-ended thing, so we’re not going to tally it for several weeks, but we’ve had a wonderful response. I’m so pleased.”
“She has done a lot for everybody, but most especially for those who need it most,” Mrs. Schaefer added. “She has touched many, many families in the county. She made you want to do well — to please her.”
Robert Leonard, assistant superintendent of schools in Warren County, related something he said Mrs. Quaintance had told him once, which he said summed up her approach to education. “It’s one thing,” she maintained, “to teach young people to make a living. It’s another thing to teach them how to lead useful productive lives.”
