season. The top five horses will be determined on points accumulated based on the value of the races that they won or placed in during the year. The owner of the leading horse will receive $30,000, a handsome sum to add to what will surely be some very respectable earnings.
On a smaller level the U.S. Trust Co. of New York has agreed to sponsor a triple crown of timber racing at three meets in Loudoun County. The company will give an award to the horse accumulating the highest overall score in the Bowman Bowl at Fairfax on Sept. 20, the Chronicle Cup at Middleburg on Oct. 4 and the Samuel H. Rogers Memorial at Morven Park on Oct. 11.
The Loudoun County Timber Triple Crown is not U.S. Trust’s first venture into steeplechasing, however. As one of the trustees and the business manager of the Westmoreland Davis Foundation, U.S. Trust has gained experience in steeplechasing through the Foundation’s sponsoring of the Morven Park races.
“Our involvement in Morven Park is quite extensive and goes back a number of years, and because of that we decided to get into steeplechasing a bit more,” explains Angelina M. Painter, executive president of U.S. Trust. “The purpose of sponsoring this series is to try to create a stronger interest in timber racing and to get more people involved in the sport. It’s also a forum for us to get some exposure and some new clients. If this works
