For centuries the human diet has consisted of relatively few kinds of plants and domesticated snimsia Since the 1940s, however, increased population, new technology and economic factors have challenged traditional concepts of food supply, leading to the discovery of synthetic food.
The process was given a boost by our space program, which stimulated research with wider applications. Dehydrated items became convenient for astronauts because water is a by-product of the hydrogen and oxygen-powered foel cells of space vehicles. Other developments have resulted in bite-sized foodstuffs with the consistency of soft, moist plastic. Here on earth such technology is important, especially in areas where meat and fish — important sources of protein - are lacking.
New foods made from protein concentrates actually resemble the textures of meat, fish and shellfish.
