►Races

country race meet.

Pony races for juniors (children under 18) are always run on the flat. In these races one will see the children of many of the older riders pushing their ponies at their fastest pace towards the finish line.

In a hurdle race the obstacles will be either cedarpacked wooden boxes or the plastic-topped, man-made National Fences. Horses run at great speed over hurdles, literally “brushing” through the top of the jump.

Jumping ability is important in a hurdle race, but it is not as crucial as in a timber race. In general, horses running over hurdles can be younger and less experienced than timber horses.

The fences in a timber race are supposed to approximate those a horse would encounter in the hunt
