willing to sell 60 to 100 acres of the tract, should it prove suitable for a sanitary landfill. "But it doesn’t look very good,” Mr. McCarthy said. “We found only 12 to 18 feet to bedrock - tentatively. . . The best part for a landfill is far in the back (of the tract) and split up.”
The county’s search to find an acceptable landfill site continues to be a race against the clock. Existing state permits for the privately owned and operated landfill on Clifton Clark’s property in Woodville will expire July 1. According to regional solid waste supervisor Robert Forman, a closure plan has been approved and implementation begun.
Engineering reports received last month found property owned by Lee Partnership unsuitable for a dump. That site, located on the Fodderstack Road near the town of Washington, had the Board of Supervisors’ endorsement and was the only landfill application before the state’s permitting agency. According to Mr. Forman, the Department of Solid Waste Management is taking upwards of eight months to process applications for sanitary landfills.
