Virginia Gold Cup
The first Saturday in May will bring the 61st running of the Virginia Gold Cup Races at Great Meadow near The Plains. A National Steeplechase and Hunt Association sanctioned meet, the seven-race card promises to attract top horses.
Also, a tailgating competition sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Magazine promises a fun and filling day.
The first race, the Stratfordupon-Avon, offers a $10,000 purse to the first horses across the 2-mile brush course of National Fences. The following race, the V irginia Silver Cup, offers an equal prize for its 3'/4-mile timber contest for maidens.
